He has been a commercial fisherman for most of his life. His academic career included studying biology and philosophy at Northern Arizona University and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has worked for the Institute of Marine Science, School of Fisheries and Ocean Science, has taught Marine Biology to students in the Quest Program at the local school, and holds a 100 Ton US Coast Guard Masters License. He is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician and active with the Seldovia Volunteer Fire and Rescue service. He is currently working in oil spill response planning when he's not out playing on the water.
